Diamond Creek East have the spirit (2008)

[Home | News ]

Keep an eye out for ‘Diamo Spirit’ and ‘Diamo Torpedo’ as they fly around the Holden Track at Maryborough.
Diamond Creek East Primary School scored two firsts in Casey and a second in Maroondah, so this could well
be their lucky year.
We talked to the excited bunch at the 2008 CityLink Vehicle Efficiency Day on Friday September 5.
Diamond Creek East have the spirit

EB (Energy Breakthrough): Great names! How did you decide on them?

Diamond Creek East (DCE): Diamond Creek and Diamond Creek East Primary Schools are both involved and have worked together to make sure we are the best we can be. That’s how the word ‘spirit’ became involved.

EB: Is the school taking part in EB as part of class at school, a club, or anextra-curricular activity?

DCE:
Both. The children are expected to participate in the after school and lunch-time sessions, on top of their time spent working on it during class.

EB: How have you raised money so far?
DCE: We have used fundraisers, held a dance, had a sausage sizzle and raffle, supervised at a local disco, and had help from sponsors.

EB: Any Sponsors?
DCE: Sponsors have been the parents’ companies. Some major sponsors include Harnetty's Racing Trikes and Components, Alco Batteries, Aussie Bodies, Panel Shed, and Mills Rubber.

EB:
What aspect of EB have you found most difficult so far?

DCE: The time involved in fundraising, and we are constantly having to dip into our savings. Also having time to do everything, there is lots to learn and keep control of!

EB: What have you done differently this year as opposed to last year?
DCE: Our training. This year training has been based on riding bikes instead of circuit training. We have also spent more time looking at different vehicle designs.

EB: Is there an expectation this year to perform well?
DCE: There is because of the time and money that the school puts in.
The expectation is simply that the students will do the best they can.

EB:
Tell us a little bit about your vehicles

DCE: The vehicle we’re developing is black in colour and is an open vehicle. It is made of corflute, polycarbonate, and chro-moly.

EB: Your aims for 2008?
DCE: To win, to have fun, and to beat (Weeroona College Bendigo’s) ‘BulletProof’!

EB: What have been the rewards?
DCE: The fun and enjoyment of it, fitness and diet, and making new friends. Also being rewarded with two firsts in Casey and a second in Maroondah!

EB: How have you found today’s events (at the CityLink Vehicle Efficiency Day)?
DCE: Today has been awesome, better than school! And free sausages!
