Everything you need to know, now that the 2011 'Breakthrough is over!

As we wrap-up a fantastic 21st RACV Energy Breakthrough, we’d like to thank all of the students, teachers, parents, friends and family who made it such a great success. Despite the inclement weather, we are pleased to hear from so many people that they felt this year was one of the smoothest ever – on and off the track.

PushcartsThank you to our sponsors
Our sponsors also deserve a special mention, as without their amazing support we would not be able to offer these enjoyable experiences.

Our three partner organisations: the RACV, Country Education Project and Central Goldfields Shire Council would like to thank The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Holden, VicRoads, bankMECU, Coles Supermarket Maryborough, Central Highlands Water, Bombardier, Telstra CountryWide and Bendigo IT.

Not sponsors, but great track-side supporters that also we'd like to thank: MultiSport Australia for counting all of the laps, NodeCity who provided the wireless network for free, HPVResults.com.au who hosted our live race results and Barry Cox from St Margaret's & Berwick Grammar School who kindly supplied the Results (and rain radar display!) in the Admin Centre.

The weather again, threw challenges at all of us – sun and rain.
Pre-HPV Start 2011When the skies opened on Saturday morning and we received 20mm of rain, many people thought that we were going to be washed out. Thankfully, we were able to finish up the Primary HPV event on schedule as the storms began, but were forced to abandon the Pushcart sprint event shortly after 11am.

The start of the 24 hour trials were delayed by an hour each, and when the Energy Efficient Vehicles and Try-athlon teams took to the Holden track at 2pm and the Secondary Human Powered Vehicles to the RACV Track at 2:30pm, we were about to start the first ever 23 hour trials!

Congratulations to everyone who persevered through the tough conditions, including our local Central Goldsfield Shire grounds crew who cut through the gutter on Lake Corner with a concrete saw a back-hoe to drain the water from the track!

The Innovations in Technology teams still sailed on Saturday afternoon despite the gloomy skies making some of the solar powered boats less energetic than the students would have liked! Thank you to our co-ordinators Peter Blackburn and Peter Daniel.

FrankstonWe were actually very lucky with the weather: properties just 4 kilometres from the event site received 58 mm of rain on Saturday. That much rain would have been simply too much to get through!
Thursday and Sunday – by contrast – were fine and sunny.
Perfect EB weather!

Congratulations on such enjoyable, clean competitive rivalries
All of the classes and events saw some fantastic competition – and not just for the overall wins either. Speaking to some team managers, they and their students often form friendly rivalries with another team – and it may be for third place or thirtieth! All of these challenges are part of the fun and we’re glad that they are all held in good faith.

The Try-athlon event was again fantastic and this year included a ramp in the Obstacle course - which was a real crowd favourite. Great to have Mary Preston, John Mills, Hayden Mills and Nathan Boon running it.

So, what now?

Buddy up with a school near you for 2012
Buddy Up!We love having new schools involved in the Energy Breakthrough program and if there is a school near you that doesn’t participate – think about ‘buddying up’ with them for 2012. We know of a number of schools who’ve done this in 2011 and it’d be great to see more of it in the future.

Get in touch with us if you'd like some advice on how to get started.

Volunteering in 2012
VolunteerOur event relies on over 600 volunteers to judge, marshal, run track events, be a stage presenter, administer, set-up and pack-down. Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers this year – you were amazing!

If you, or someone you know, is passionate about the event and would like to get involved, email us at breakthrough[at]cgoldshire.vic.gov.au and you can get involved next year.
