HPV teams took to the streets of Melbourne for 2 hours yesterday
as part of the final day of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. The
circuit length was approximately 1 km and took in parts of St
Kilda Rd, Birdwood Ave and Linlithgow Ave.
Of the 16 crews on site, 8
were primary school teams, 5 secondary and 3 all-female.
The Flora Hill SC crew 'Sardine Extreme' led throughout
the event despite a rollover early on in the hairpin.
There was a great buzz
amongst the HPV community, with Coxy on-site, a great
sense of camaraderie and a beautiful day. |

Despite this years demonstration
starting much later than in 2006, it was still a sleepy Sunday
for many for the teams who had travelled from as far as
Wonthaggi and Bendigo to take part. There was a steady stream of
foot traffic around the famous tan running track and plenty of
intrigued looks accompanied by:
"What are those things?" Marshalls and teams were
only too happy to fill them in! |

The demonstration was a curtain raiser to the main race of the
day - the seventh stage of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour - and
provided a great opportunity for teams to give some of their
inexperienced riders and pit crew a feel for racing in a welcome
and relaxed atmosphere. There was plenty of action in the pit
lane as teams were required to change riders every 15 minutes
and St Margaret's School generously offered a spare tube to
Tootgarook PS after a flat tyre threatened to ruin the Primary
School's morning. |

After all vehicles were scrutineered on site by the RACV,
marshalls (provided by teams) and riders were briefed and
energised.
The race began with a formation lap behind an RACV vehicle with
Channel 7 personality 'Coxy' waving the Australian flag to
start. Coxy and his crew enjoyed filming throughout the morning.
Nigel Preston (RACV EB Planning
Committee) provided special comments over the public address
system and all four major HPV programs - Wonthaggi, Maroondah,
Berwick and Maryborough all shared the load to make the
demonstration a success. |
