The newest category at the RACV Energy Breakthrough, the Try-athalon is quickly growing in popularity and competitiveness.

Teams participate in the Display & Presentation and Design & Construction sections, which represent 20% each and three physical tests – resulting in the most widely assessed category at the Breakthrough.
Entrants use the same design requirements as the Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs) and participate in three elements:

  • Time Trial – a short sprint race held on the front straight on the RACV track, where teams rotate through each of their riders to record the fastest time. Teams with quick changeovers and speed are rewarded, as the time trial represents 15% of the overall score.
  • Obstacle Course – held on the Time Trial course but with a series of hay bales to negotiate, the obstacle course comprises 15% of the overall score. Teams with excellent vehicle control and handling will perform well; whilst misfortune often results for teams unfamiliar with their vehicles capabilities.
  • Endurance Trial – As the Hybrid grid is assembled on Saturday, the observant Breakthrough spectator may notice Try-athalon teams littered throughout the field. As they dice wheel-to-wheel on the Holden track for eight hours, they get to test the endurance of their vehicles and their riders for the final 30% of the overall score.
