Waste
Wise is a practical, step-by-step program inspiring Victorians to
minimise waste and maximise the efficient use of valuable resources.
Waste Wise
shows you how to integrate sustainable principles into everyday
operations, as well as how your event/ organisation can benefit from the
tangible results that flow from commitment to responsible waste
management practices.
The program is managed by Sustainability Victoria and delivered locally
by Rosemary Angus, Regional Education Officer and Manager Waste Wise
Program with the Highlands Regional Waste Management Group.
Waste Wise is far more than just a 'feel good' program. It has
been extensively tested, trialled and documented for nearly ten years
and proven to produce tangible, measurable outcomes.
Waste Wise at RACV Energy Breakthrough
The Energy Breakthrough
has been involved in the Waste Wise events program since 1999. In
achieving ongoing certification the Energy Breakthrough demonstrates its
leadership in event management. The Planning Committee believes that
focusing on the event's waste management is an important extension of
the environmental efforts made by students on the tracks.
To achieve Waste Wise
certification the Energy Breakthrough has developed a Waste Management
Plan and implemented strategies to reduce, reuse and recycle.
These Waste Wise Strategies include:
-
Making a commitment to be Waste
Wise continuously since 1999.
-
Encouraging participants, campers
and stallholders to reduce waste,
-
Using the Waste Wise bin caps to
make recycling of drink containers easy,
-
Providing cage trailers for
recycling large objects such as cardboard boxes and 20L water
containers,
-
Displaying the Waste Wise banners
and using the logo,
-
Placing bins, cage trailers and
skips in easy to use locations for the campers and stallholders,
-
The waste management team monitor
the bins and assist the waste and recycling collection contactor,
-
Produce a waste assessment report
that identifies areas for improvement next year, and
-
Promote Waste Wise to event
participants, stallholders, sponsors and visitors.
Waste Wise certification
acknowledges the RACV Energy Breakthrough’s commitment to a sustainable
future and identifies it as an environmental leader.
