How do we judge the teams?Sub-Heading
And another sub-head
The RACV Energy Breakthrough is designed to cover a wide range of students’ skills and talents – not just their physical fitness. Teams gain valuable points through the Design & Construction and Display & Presentation sections of the event.
All sections must be attempted and points are awarded in the following sections:
| Breakdown of Scoring System | HPV & Hybrids | Pushcarts | Try-athlon |
| Display and Presentation | 25% |
30 (including 10 points for Obstacle Course) |
20 |
| Design and Construction | 25% |

20 20 |
30 15 15 |
As a result, the fastest team on the
track does not always take home the overall victory, as impressive
presentations and innovative vehicle designs translate into higher
scores.
Design and Construction
At a
designated time, teams will be required to demonstrate to judges that
all members have developed a thorough understanding of the design and
construction aspects of their entry.
Teams can use design drawings to explain their effort and input, innovation and quality, safety,
practicality, stability and on-road performance and understanding of
environmental issues.
More
information on the judging of Design and Construction can be
found in the event handbook.
Display
and Presentation
Each team will be required to present a 20
minute presentation to a panel of three judges: a community
representative; one teacher or education representative; one young
person interested in education and/ or technology.
Teams often present short dramas, multimedia shows and team launches likened to those of a new Holden.
Teams are assessed on their visual display, as well as their presentation style, team work and knowledge and understanding of the aims of the Breakthrough.
More information on the judging of Display and Presention can be found in the event handbook.
Scrutineering
Conducted by
qualified RACV Vehicle Testers and past Energy Breakthrough
participants
HPV and Hybrid Vehicles will firstly have to undergo a check to
ensure the vehicles are safe and meet all the design
specifications. RACV Officials will examine all vehicles before
the assessment process starts. Where vehicles do not comply with
specifications, or are considered unsafe, scrutineers will
provide assistance and/or direction with work required in order
to comply.
Teams will be allocated hourly blocks in which to complete scrutineering. This will ensure that all vehicles are checked in a timely and efficient manner.
More information on the Scrutineering process can be found in the event handbook.
